PROGRAM DESCRIPTION - EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

EMS iconBecome an Emergency Medical Technician, and learn the many lifesaving skills and techniques such as CPR and treatment of traumatic injuries. These are but a few of the medical skills necessary for certification as a Certifi­ed First Responder (CFR) in emergency medical situations. You also have the opportunity to become a certifi­ed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B), able to work on 911 and/or private ambulances and in hospital emergency rooms. This EMT training is an excellent foundation on which to build a career in medicine.   Students complete 10 hours minimum of observation under the supervision of a preceptor at a designated ambulance company or hospital.  Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the New York State Certified First Responder (CFR) and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Examination. 

Course available: Grades 11 - 12

Course length: 2 years

Credits: 6 CTE elective credit; 1.0 English; 1.0 Science

Note: All students who complete  the 2-year EMS program at SWBOCES Center for Career Services will receive high school credit and NYS Certified First Responder (CFR) certification upon passing the CFR assessment.  Those students who will be 18 years of age by August will also be eligible for five credits from Westchester Community College (WCC).

COLLEGE CREDITS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Upon successful completion of this program, students may receive college credits pending established procedures.  Students may also receive an industry certification pending successful completion of an industry certification exam.  All students completing this program and passing the appropriate industry certification exam will receive an endorsed high school diploma.  Please see below for college credits and industry certifications available.
